Young Boys Beat the Big Boys!

Young Boys of Switzerland snatch a last gasp 2-1 victory at home to Manchester United. Cristiano Ronaldo nets a goal but it isn’t enough on the night against the Swiss champions!

Manchester United conceded a dramatic 95th-minute goal, as they lost to Young Boys in Group F, even though Cristiano Ronaldo scored on his Champions League (UCL) return for the Red Devils.

Ronaldo became the joint all-time UCL appearance holder with Iker Casillas on this, his 177th appearance in the competition. He fired United ahead after a perfect pass from fellow Portuguese Bruno Fernandes. Ronaldo’s goalward shot had just enough power to roll over the line after a half save from the legs of David von Ballmoos in the Young Boys goal.

United were forced to play with 10 men for 60 minutes after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s dangerous stamp on Christopher Martins’ foot earned the defender a straight red card 10 minutes before the break.

Cameroon international Moumi Ngamaleu then stepped up to score with the clock showing 66 minutes. He toe-poked a Silvan Hefti cross past David de Gea in the United goal to level the match at 1-1.

Things went from bad to worse for United. A 95th-minute horror back-pass by substitute Jesse Lingard put Jordan Siebatcheu in to score the winner for the Young Boys and send the home fans delirious.

After the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had to reflect on a performance that saw United manage just 2 shots, the fewest on record in any Champions League match since 2003-04.

United now host Villarreal in their next Group F game on the 29th of September in a rerun of last season’s Europa League final. After 1 game, Young Boys top the group, with United bottom. Atalanta and Villareal have 1 point each after yesterday’s 2-2 draw in Spain
