Chelsea Edge Past Aston Villa on Penalties!

The Carabao Cup tie ends with the scores tied at 1-1. Chelsea win the penalty shoot-out 4-3!

Reece James found the winning penalty in a shootout, as Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea outfit reached the last 16 of the Carabao Cup at the expense of Aston Villa. The defender fired home the Blues’ final penalty to win the shootout 4-3.

Chelsea’s Goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga was also a hero for the West London club, as he saved Zimbabwean Midfielder Marvelous Nakamba’s spot-kick after Ashley Young could only hit the crossbar for Villa.

A headed goal from Timo Werner had earlier put the Blues ahead, after James’ pinpoint cross found him perfectly, with the clock showing 54 minutes. At that point, it looked like the German’s 1st goal in 11 club matches would win the game in normal time and he should have scored again soon after, but he somehow dragged his shot from close range wide of the target.

Dean Smith’s Aston Villa, who had competed admirably during the game, deservedly levelled the scores when Cameron Archer showed great technique in the air, to steer home a headed equaliser on 64 minutes.

That made it 4 goals in 2 EFL Cup games this season for the 19-year-old forward, who also netted a hat-trick in the 6-0 win over Barrow in the second round. However, it was ultimately to be a heartbreak for Villa in the shootout.

“I’m happy because we won, it was a hard one, and now we have some competitive minutes in more players’ legs”, Tuchel said after the game.

Wednesday’s result extends Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season, which has also seen them go 1st in the Premier League with 13 points from 5 matches. The Blues will now face Southampton in the last 16 of the competition at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea haven’t won the EFL Cup since the 2014-15 season, but will be feeling optimistic about their chances this year!
