Manchester United host Villareal in this Champions League matchup on Wednesday evening. Cristiano Ronaldo eyes up another record!
Just over 4 months after defeat in the Europa League final to Villareal, Manchester United will be looking for revenge when these two sides clash in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) group stage on Wednesday evening. In their last UCL games, the Red Devils slumped to a shock 1-2 defeat away to Young Boys in their opening Group F encounter, while Unai Emery’s Villareal drew 2-2 at home against Atalanta.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær will be forced to make 3 changes to United’s back 4. In the full-back positions, Alex Telles and Diogo Dalot are expected to start, while Victor Lindelof is likely to start ahead of former Villareal man, Eric Bailly. Rafael Varane should be the other half of centre-back pairing.
Fred and Scott Mctominay will probably continue their engine room partnership, and Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood look like likely starters in the more advanced midfield positions. This would mean that Jesse Lingard and Jadon Sancho begin this game from the bench again.
Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to be the focal point upfront and he will overtake Iker Casillas for the most appearances in UCL history (178!), should he play any part here.
As for Villarreal, Emery seems likely to name a similar side that drew with Real Madrid last weekend. That would mean that Arnaut Danjuma would start alongside fellow attackers Paco Alcacer and Yeremi Pino.
Francis Coquelin was sent off against Atalanta earlier this month, so is ineligible due to suspension. Therefore, Etienne Capoue and Dani Parejo should be joined in a 3 man midfield by Manu Trigueros.
This could be a closer game than you expect. We expect a home victory for Manchester United, but not by much. Our prediction is 2-1 to the Red Devils!
