Bundesliga Battles! – Part II

In this, the concluding part of of our series on greatest Bundesliga rivalries, we check out the the fiercest in Germany’s top-tier!

Der Klassiker – Bayern Munich V Borussia Dortmund

There wasn’t much rivalry between these sides when they began playing each other. But today, Der Klassiker is perhaps the most anticipated match in German football. The 2 teams fought see-saw battles throughout the early 2010s. Games played during this time included a 5-2 German cup final win for Borussia Dortmund!

However, the most memorable game has to be the 2013 UEFA Champions League final at Wembley, where the sides clashed in the first all-German final in history. In the dying minutes of what looked like being a 1-1 draw, Bayern’s Arjen Robben scored a late winner to clinch the title and earn Bayern their 1st Der Klassiker win since February 2010!

The last time they met Bayern won 3-1 in Dortmund!

There is no doubt that this is the most heated fixture in German football! The games played between the teams from Gelsenkirchen and Dortmund have always been fiercely contested. With the 2 stadiums less than 40 km apart, Schalke and Dortmund have played host to some of the most memorable matches in German football history. Both sides have ended winning streaks and title hopes for the other, and both have had memorable comebacks.

In September 2008, Dortmund came storming back from a 0-3 deficit in a matter of 21 minutes to salvage a 3-3 draw. In November 2017, Schalke returned the favour in even more dramatic style! After conceding 4 goals in 25 minutes, Schalke battled back with courage and heart in the 2nd half. They scored the equaliser deep into stoppage time to steal 2 points from Dortmund!

In their last encounter, Dortmund ran out 3-0 winners at home!
