Premier League Wonder-Goals! – Part I

The history of the English Premier League (EPL) is full of fantastic strikes from great players! This series will count down 10 of the best!

10. Paul Scholes (Manchester United V Aston Villa, 2006-07)

Paul Scholes was a complete midfielder. He is one of the EPL’s all-time greats! It would be easily possible to put together a list of 10 best Scholes strikes and still have plenty of great goals to spare. In fact, if you saw Scholes’ name on the scoresheet, you could pretty much guarantee that it was an absolute screamer!

This goal was perhaps his finest. It was a superbly taken volley from outside the area, which sailed into the Villa net after the Midlands club failed to clear the ball properly from a United corner.

9. Tony Yeboah (Leeds United V Wimbledon, 1995-96)

Ghanian striker Tony Yeboah almost never scored a boring goal. The mercurial hitman achieved cult status at Leeds because of his amazing goals, and this one was the best! In the end, the shot was a top corner bullet, but it is the series of touches before he applied the finish that sets this goal apart.

Unsurprisingly, Yeboah was always a regular feature in EPL Goal of the Month contests. The Ghanian could, and perhaps should, have become a true Leeds legend, but he fell out with then Leeds manager George Graham in 1998. However, Tony Yeboah did more than enough to make a permanent impression on EPL fans!

8.  Dalian Atkinson (Aston Villa V Wimbledon, 1992-93)

Dalian Atkinson may not go down in history as one of the EPL’s all-time greats, but he was a tremendously effective player for Aston Villa in the early ’90s. A love for the game’s external excesses meant he never fulfilled his true potential, but this goal was a fantastic effort. Unfortunately, the ex-Aston Villa man tragically died at the hands of a police officer in 2016.

In life, this was his finest footballing moment. Atkinson drove forward from his own half and used fantastic pace to race past a sliding opponent and his amazing close control to jink past another. He then moved into the opposition half, ran through a tackle as if it wasn’t there, and, after quickly looking up, left the Wimbledon goalkeeper looking stupid with a perfect lob.
