Our series on the best English Premier League (EPL) strikes of all time concludes with the best 4 goals of all time!
4. Robin van Persie (Arsenal V Charlton Athletic, 2005-06)
This is undoubtedly Robin Van Persie’s greatest moment in an Arsenal shirt. A cross is floated into the Charlton box and it looks harmless, possibly overhit. That is, until the Dutch hitman appears out of nowhere, surging into the box, and meets the ball with one of the sweetest volleys you’re ever likely to see!
3. Paolo Di Canio (West Ham V Wimbledon, 1999-2000)
What separates Paolo Di Canio’s EPL wonder-strike from other sweetly-struck volleys is the angle that it’s scored from. Paul Scholes and Robin van Persie amongst others, all slammed the ball home on the volley with a huge target to aim at, but not Di Canio. Where most would simply take a touch, the Italian striker jumps and scissor kicks the ball with the outside of his foot into the far corner. A simply incredible goal!
2. Matthew Le Tissier (Southampton V Newcastle United, 1993-94)
Matthew ‘Le God’ Le Tissier scored some absolutely fantastic strikes in his time, but surely this goes down as his very best. The goal is reminiscent of Paul Gascoigne’s famous strike against Scotland at Euro 1996, except it’s even better! Even though the original pass was behind him, Le Tissier’s first flick brings the ball under his spell. His second touch beats one Newcastle defender, before his third takes the ball over the head of another and back into his path. Eventually, the ensuing half-volley nestles into the bottom corner via ice-cool Le Tissier’s magic wand of a right foot!
1. Dennis Bergkamp (Arsenal V Newcastle, 2001-02)
This is the EPL goal that we are rating as the best of all time! Dennis Bergkamp, another Dutchman playing up-front for Arsenal, receives the ball on the edge of the Newcastle box. His first touch is an unbelievably deft one and it allows him to perfectly spin the defender and set up a one-on-one with the goalkeeper on his favoured right foot. The ‘Iceman’ from the Netherlands then just calmly rolls the ball inside the right post and into the EPL history books!
