Liverpool Ease Past Atlético and Into the Last 16!

Jota and Mané are on target at Anfield, as the Reds cruise past Atlético Madrid. Klopp’s men now go into the UEFA Champions League (UCL) last 16!

Liverpool continued their perfect start to the 2021/22 UCL, with a 2-0 Group B win over Atlético Madrid, at Anfield on Wednesday night. The result secures the Reds a fully-deserved place in the last 16.

Liverpool beat Atlético 3-2 in Madrid in the reverse fixture on October the 19th, with Antoine Griezmann shown a red card, before Mohamed Salah netted the winning strike from the penalty spot.

Diogo Jota and Sadio Mané put the hosts into a 2-0 lead within the first 20 minutes here at Anfield, with Trent Alexander-Arnold providing both assists for Jürgen Klopp’s side.

“The first target was to get through this group. I didn’t expect we would be through after four games but the boys did it and it’s really well deserved,” said Klopp.

Atlético received another setback just before half-time when Felipe was shown a red card for a foul on Mané. The Senegal international looked to have a clear path to goal, as he was fouled by the Brazilian centre-back. The decision left the Madrid club forced to finish the match with 10 men.

Diego Simeone’s Atlético tried to get back into the game but were left frustrated, as Liverpool dominated possession of the ball, and saw out the result to take all three points.

First-placed Liverpool are on 12 points in Group B and are certain to reach the round of 16, having won four games out of four. Meanwhile, Atlético are in third with four points. Simeone’s outfit are one point behind Porto, who sit second, after playing out a 1-1 draw with bottom side AC Milan earlier in the day.
