Beleagured Newcastle go behind after a Trossard strike, but earn an away point, courtesy of a goal from Hayden!
Brighton & Hove Albion forward Leandro Trossard’s first-half goal was cancelled out by Newcastle United’s Isaac Hayden, as the two teams played out a 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium on Saturday. The result extends the Magpies’ winless start to the 2021/22 English Premier League (EPL) campaign.
The draw keeps Brighton in sixth place in the EPL table with 17. Newcastle are now second from bottom with just five points after 11 games played so far.
After a dull start, the game exploded into life in the 22nd minute when Trossard was brought down by Ciaran Clark and a penalty was finally awarded, following a lengthy VAR check. The Belgian international then stepped up himself to smash the spot-kick past Karl Darlow and into the Newcastle net.
Brighton dominated the ball as Newcastle failed to create any openings. The Magpies failed to register any shots on target in the first half.
Trossard then came close to adding a second immediately after half-time, but the forward’s low drive was kept out by Darlow before Newcastle equalised in the 66th minute through midfielder Hayden, who volleyed home from close range.
Brighton ended the game with 10 men, and with centre-half Lewis Dunk in goal, after shot-stopper Robert Sanchez was dismissed on 92 minutes for fouling Callum Wilson just outside the area, with the striker clear through on goal.
