While Mexico are historically a much better team of the two, the United States men’s national team (USMNT) have the edge right now, having beaten Mexico both in the CONCACAF Nations League final and also in the Gold Cup final! Can they get their third win in a row?
Mexico are currently sitting in first place in the North and Central American qualifying group on 14 points. They are yet to lose a game, having won four and drawn two. USMNT are second on 11 points with three wins, two draws, and one loss.
A United States win at Cincinnati tomorrow night could fire them up into the first place in the group while a loss would strengthen the position of Mexico. The advantage arguably lies in the USMNT’s corner. They will be playing at home and only some time after stealing two precious pieces of silverware from Mexico.
In June of this year, the USMNT beat Mexico 3-2 in the Nations League final after an extra-time goal from Pulisic. The game was filled with great offensive football and emotions ran high. This, however, was not the only blow from the USMNT to Mexico this year, as they also beat them 1-0 in the Gold Cup final. And the US actually beat them in the second final with a completely different squad compared to the one in the Nations League, with only a single player keeping his place!
Mexico have more than enough reasons to get back at the US. Looking at their current forms during the World Cup qualifiers, Mexico are doing slightly better, having won both of their last two games. The US, on the other hand, suffered a surprising loss to Panama only a month ago, and then bounced back against Costa Rica.
Both teams are undoubtedly favourites to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup and we expect an entertaining high-scoring game. The US are slight favourites in our opinion, as they haven’t lost a home game since 2019 and they have beaten Mexico twice already this year. With Pulisic likely finally back after a long recovery from an injury, we can’t wait to watch this exciting battle!
