Tomori nets for AC Milan, but the Reds come flying back to win 2-1 at the San Siro and send the giants of the Rossoneri out of European competition!

Liverpool overcame AC Milan 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) on Tuesday night, to knock the Serie A side out of European competition for the 2021/22 season.

Fikayo Tomori broke the deadlock for Stefano Pioli’s home side, right before the half-hour mark, when he side-footed a kind rebound into the back of the Reds‘ net.

Liverpool hit back soon after when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s strike was spilled into the path of Mohamed Salah, who found a typically self-assured finish to level the scores before half time.

The Egyptian now becomes the first Liverpool player to score 20 or more goals in five consecutive seasons, since Ian Rush, who achieved the feat in six campaigns on the bounce between 1981 and 1987.

Divock Origi put Liverpool ahead shortly after the restart when an error from the Milan defence gifted Sadio Mané the ball in the area. The senegal man’s subsequent shot was parried to the striker, who nodded a fine header past home keeper, Mike Maignan to make it 2-1.

It was the Belgium international’s first goal in the UCL since he scored the second in a 2-0 win in the 2019 final against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Rossoneri played with more purpose in the remainder of the second half, but couldn’t find an equaliser. Franck Kessie wasted their best chance when he was foiled in a one-on-one by visiting keeper, Alisson.

Jürgen Klopp’s side finish the UCL group stages with a 100% record of six wins from six matches, while Milan end their European campaign bottom of the Group B table. Porto in third are destined for the UEFA Europa League.
