Ghana’s shock elimination from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Cameroon on Tuesday night has attracted the wrath of the Ghanaian government.
The Black Stars were knocked out by debutants Comoros who beat them 3-2 in their final Group C game at the Roumde Adjia stadium in Garoua, Ghana exiting the tournament without a single win for the first time ever in its 22 appearances at the biennial championship.
Ghana lost 1-0 to Morocco in the opening match, drew 1-1 with Gabon before losing to Comoros and consequently crushing out of the AFCON finals at the group stage for the first time since 2006.
The Ghanaian government has now summoned the Ghana Football Association (GFA) due to the awful performance by the four-time champions in Cameroon.
“The ministry (of Youth and Sports) has summoned the Ghana Football Association (G.F.A) leadership to an emergency meeting to urgently discuss and take decisions aimed at salvaging the performance of the Black Stars especially in the next set of the game,” Ghanaian Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif said in a statement on Wednesday, January 19.
In a meeting scheduled for Friday, January 21, the federation will be tasked to explain the results by the nation that is ranked eighth in Africa by FIFA.
“The country is extremely disappointed with the abysmal performance and early exit (from the Africa Cup of Nations finals). The ministry is particularly disappointed with the team’s performance given that it was provided with all the needed logistical and financial support for preparations and participation in the continental football showpiece,” Ussif’s statement added.
Reports from Ghana indicate that the moody is gloomy following the shock exit from the tournament and one that came against a minnow.
